[Don't worry even during the rainy season!] Here are some effective ways to protect your bag from the rain

Hello, this is Kawada Daiki from HushTug.

In today's blog, we will show you how to care for leather using a waterproof spray.

The rainy season is scheduled to begin in the Kanto area around June 8th, with the full-scale rainy season starting in about two weeks.

Leather is not a material that is resistant to rain, so be sure to take good care of it in advance before using your leather products.

First of all, let me explain why it is important to take care of your leather. If you leave leather exposed to rain or water, the water will penetrate the leather and cause water stains and the leather will become soft and wrinkled.

Therefore, if you take waterproofing measures in advance, you can prevent water from penetrating and reduce the risk of water stains and wrinkles.

Furthermore, waterproof care not only repels water, but also prevents dirt from sticking, making daily care much easier.

So let's quickly explain how to do it.

First, there are three things you need to prepare in advance:

Horsehair brushes and waterproof sprays are very useful for caring for various leather products, so if you don't have them, we recommend that you take this opportunity to purchase some.

For reference, here is the Amazon page for the product we actually use at HushTug.

1. Horsehair brush

Use this to remove dust and dirt from the bag before applying waterproof spray.

2. Waterproof spray

At HushTug, we recommend using Collonil waterproof spray.

Fluorine-based waterproof sprays do not inhibit breathability, so they are gentle on leather products and are effective against not only water, but also dirt and oil. Choose a fluorine-based waterproof spray.

3. Cloth (for dry wiping)

This is used for finishing after drying. We use the one in the photo below, but basically any cotton material will do.

Now let me explain how to care for it.

1. Remove dirt and dust from the surface

Use a horsehair brush to remove dirt and dust from the surface of the bag, as shown in the image below.

Brush the surface gently without using too much pressure.

2. Apply waterproof spray outdoors

When outdoors, spray the bag evenly with waterproof spray.

If you place it too close, the spray will not be even, so use it about 20 to 30 cm away from the bag.

*Before using the waterproof spray, spray it into an empty space and make sure that it comes out in a mist without any problems before spraying it onto your bag.
If you pour it onto the bag right away, it may end up in grains, which could result in uneven application.

3. Dry

After applying the waterproof spray, leave it for 20 to 30 minutes and let it dry naturally.

If you use it before it has completely dried, it may not be as effective, so be sure to wait until it has completely dried before using it.

4. When dry, wipe with a cloth.

Once the surface is completely dry, wipe it dry with a clean cloth.

This completes the care using waterproof spray!

Next we will answer some frequently asked questions.

FAQ

- Will it be absolutely safe if I take care of it waterproof?

Just because you have taken waterproof care does not mean that it will be completely safe if it gets wet in the rain.

Although the speed at which the dye penetrates the leather will be slower, leaving it for long periods of time is not recommended.

If it gets wet, wipe it off as soon as possible.

-How long does the waterproof effect last?

The duration of the waterproofing spray varies depending on the type, but Collonil's waterproofing spray is effective for about a week.

Therefore, to keep it in good condition for a long time, you should perform regular maintenance.

Today we're introducing how to waterproof your bag.

This is a basic care method that can be used for any leather product, not just bags.

Take care to waterproof your leather products before you go out so you can enjoy them on rainy days without worrying.
