History of D.bell (formerly Handbag Suzuki)
History of D.bell

Founded about 90 years ago in Ueno as a company manufacturing drawstring bags for geishas. At its peak, it produced 2,000 to 3,000 bags per month, earning immense trust within the industry to the extent that it has never had a single day without work since its establishment.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, when orders declined and the company faced a crisis, we met HushTug. We resonated with their philosophy of "showcasing excellent dormant technologies to the world," leading us to undertake almost all of HushTug's production.

Workshop
D.bell has garnered continuous attention in the industry, having never had a single day without work since its founding. This underlying strength supports all of HushTug's products.

Combining the Strengths of Both "Manufacturer" and "Artisan"
Production

In the world of bag making, it is common for "manufacturers" and "artisans" to work separately.

Maker Manufacturer
While strong in offering design proposals, material selection, and cost adjustment, there is a risk of insufficient reinforcement if the understanding of the structure is lacking.
Craftsman Artisan
Their strength lies in robust construction for long-lasting use and beautiful finishing. However, prioritizing technique can sometimes lead to over-specification, making mass production difficult.
Artisan work
Finished product
D.bell is a rare entity that combines the strengths of both. By handling production entirely in-house, they understand the overall structure as a manufacturer while focusing on fine details as artisans, achieving both "ideal durability and beauty." D.bell's true value lies in its ability to propose not only aesthetic solutions but also "designs that resist breakage through prolonged use", even for brand requests.

Overwhelming Durability Created by Invisible Reinforcement
Reinforcement Technology

Bags often experience more stress than they appear to. At D.bell, we understand each of these areas through experience and theory, and we implement measures to compensate for the weaknesses of leather, such as adding nylon reinforcement to stressed areas.

This reinforcement technique is rarely performed in typical factories. It prevents the leather from stretching or tearing while maintaining its natural texture.

Reinforcement points
Reinforcement is applied to unseen areas such as handles, shoulder straps, zipper pulls, straps, and even stitching. For the user's peace of mind, artisans meticulously craft the invisible parts with even greater care.

Thorough Management with 100% Inspection: Inspecting All 100 Products if 100 are Made
Quality Control

D.bell's quality control boasts one of the highest standards in Japan. While many manufacturers rely on "random sampling inspection," D.bell's policy is 100% inspection. From the moment materials arrive until shipment, detailed checks are performed across seven steps.

Inspection process
1
Material InspectionCheck condition of leather, lining, and hardware
2
Post-cutting InspectionCheck for scratches and inconsistencies
3
Material SelectionUnify color and texture due to lot differences
4
Parts InspectionRemove defective parts at component stage
5
Artisan InspectionCheck stitching, thread treatment, and dimensions
6
Finishing InspectionSafety check with needle detector
7
Pre-shipment InspectionRe-check for changes during storage
Inspection
If even one item does not meet the standards, it will not be shipped. This rigorous approach is why D.bell is lauded as "Japan's finest."
