It all started with some casual daily market research...


A new challenge born from daily market research

As I researched the market every day, I began to notice something strange.

Boston bags, especially those made of genuine leather, typically cost around 90,000 to 100,000 yen, with the more expensive ones costing around 150,000 yen .

The design is certainly sophisticated, but the price is too high and not easily affordable.

On the other hand, there were some relatively inexpensive options available.

However, many of them lack the texture and shape of the leather, and there are no products that you can proudly own and think are "cool."

"I want it, but it's too expensive."
"It's cheap, but I don't want to own it because of the design."

The reality that our customers were faced with was that they had only two options.

"High-end brand quality, more accessible"

So we made a strong decision.

"We want to deliver quality that rivals high-end brands in a more accessible way."

The texture of the leather, the beauty of the form, and the durability to allow for long-lasting use.
This Boston bag has all of these features and is available at a price that anyone can afford.

This was a somewhat reckless challenge, but at the same time, it was one I was confident about.

"If we can create a bag that fills this gap, there will definitely be someone waiting for it."

Thus began the story of the development of the HushTug Boston bag.


"Honestly, it's ugly!?" The first sample was a complete failure...

"Let's make a Boston bag that can rival those of high-end brands."

With this strong desire in mind, the first sample was finally completed.

The moment all the staff picked it up with excitement, the atmosphere in the room changed completely...

"Honestly, the design is awful..."
"This doesn't give off a luxurious feel."

One after another, harsh criticism was heard from craftsmen and people within the company.

Furthermore, when you actually try to wear it, both ends get crushed and the shape looks distorted.

The leather was not firm enough, and the finished product was far from being a "Boston bag that an adult could carry with confidence."

The first prototype was a complete failure...
But it was this fiasco that ignited the fire within the development team.

"How can we prevent the bag from losing its shape?" "How can we make it easier to put things in and take them out?" It was precisely because the challenges seemed like a mountain of problems that we were able to see the path to take next.

The size was determined by "interviews with customers"

When we created our products, we didn't just collect opinions.

After the first sample was completed, the customer interviews that were conducted at the time of further improvements were a turning point for the development team.

What particularly struck me was the words of one customer.

"It would be great if it was sized to fit in a golf locker."

I don't play golf, so this idea would never have occurred to me.

However, hearing this feedback helped us clarify the standards for size design.

We adjusted the width and gusset based on these two factors.

In other words, HushTug's Boston bags are not simply the "designer's ideal," but bags that have been carefully crafted by incorporating the real opinions gained from interviews .

The second sample is complete, but a new obstacle has arisen!

The second sample has finally taken shape.

In order to dispel the criticism that the first model was ``ugly,'' the size has been revised and the shape has been improved.

The silhouette when placed on a desk is certainly more dignified than the first model, and the finished product gives a sense of accomplishment.

We received such positive feedback, and it felt like a ray of hope had been shed on the entire team.

However, the reality was not so sweet...

When you actually use it...

The zippers on the side pockets are stiff and difficult to open and close.

・The shoulder strap interferes with the metal fittings and puts strain on the shoulders

"This still doesn't qualify as the Boston you really want."
I was made to feel this very strongly.

Serious attention to detail

By the second sample, the overall silhouette and size of the bag had been more or less finalized.

However, it is not yet at a stage where we can say it is "complete."
What remained were the seemingly small details that make a big difference in usability .

-Improved shoulder pads The shoulder pads also had many challenges, and it was difficult to decide on a design.

I struggled with how to balance it with the metal fittings, so I made multiple partial samples and tried them on the shoulders through repeated trial and error.

During this process, we decided to switch to a design that does not use metal fittings, ultimately achieving a simple, smart look and comfortable fit that is gentle on the shoulders .

-Improved zipper Although the side pockets were changed from magnetic to zippered, there was still the initial problem of them being stiff and difficult to open.

So we consulted with the craftsmen many times and made some small adjustments, such as moving the tape to the back to make it look neater and tucking the protruding part of the slider inside.

Furthermore, by adjusting the thickness and width of the leather, we were able to achieve both a luxurious appearance and smooth opening and closing .

It was this attention to detail that is hard to see that was the final key to completion.

Finally, the "ideal bag" was discovered and put on sale

A number of improvements have been made over a long period of time.
The final sample, the crystallization of that effort, is finally complete!

The moment I put it on my desk, I gasped.

The form stands upright without any distortion, the zipper moves smoothly as if sucked in, and the shoulder pads fit naturally to the shoulders.

When I received the first sample, I was met with comments like "It's honestly pretty lame," but there I was greeted with a truly impressive Boston bag .

The frustration of being told that the first sample was "honestly lame."
We have been making improvements over and over, shaping the feedback we received from interviews one by one.

It all paid off in this moment.

From colleagues who picked it up,

"It's completely different from the first sample."
"It has a luxurious feel, and I can serve it with confidence."

Voices like these were raised one after another.

And the feedback we received from customers during the development process:

"It's the perfect size to fit in a golf locker."
"Makes loading and unloading of luggage smoother"

It was only by incorporating all of these requests that we were able to arrive at this finished product.

When I realized this, I felt truly proud of this completion.

Improvements that awaited beyond completion: minor changes

Our work wasn't finished even after the final sample was completed.
Soon after we started selling the product, we received specific requests from customers through reviews and comments.

So we quickly implemented some minor changes .

-Improved opening : The zipper has been extended to the full width, allowing for smoother access to shirts, shoes, etc.

- Improved strength : Nylon reinforcement is used at the base of the shoulder straps, making the bag safe to use even when carrying a lot of luggage.

-Revised side pockets : To prevent the bag from losing its shape when worn, they have been redesigned from hidden zipper pockets to regular zipper pockets.

It was thanks to the feedback we received from our customers that we were able to further evolve the finished product.

A new challenge born from a new voice - Mini Boston bag

Shortly after the product went on sale, we began to hear comments like this:

"I want a smaller size that's perfect for a one-night, two-day trip."

This is a request I've heard many times in YouTube comments and conversations with customers in stores.
While the large-capacity Boston bag for a three-night stay is reliable, some people feel that it is "a little too big for everyday use."

So we started developing a new mini Boston bag .

Based on the existing design, we narrowed down the capacity to create a size that is just right for everyday use or a 1-2 day trip.

This was a new challenge that was encouraged by the experience we gained from developing large-capacity models and feedback from our customers.

The first day of release arrived with a pounding heart.
