History of D.bell (formerly Handbag Suzuki)
History of D.bell

Founded approximately 90 years ago in Ueno as a company manufacturing drawstring pouches for geishas. At its peak, it produced 2,000 to 3,000 items per month, and has garnered immense trust within the industry, to the extent that it has never had a single day without work since its founding.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, orders decreased, and the company faced a crisis, which is when it met HushTug. Driven by a shared philosophy of "showcasing excellent dormant Japanese craftsmanship to the world," D.bell took on almost all of HushTug's production.

Workshop
D.bell has never had a single day without work since its founding, continuing to attract attention in the industry. Its underlying strength supports all HushTug products.

Artisan

The expertise cultivated through manufacturing for various brands is poured into HushTug products without reservation. From a professional perspective, attention to detail is given to aspects that general customers might not even notice.

01
Durability Reinforcement Areas that bear stress during use are pre-reinforced to be sturdy.
02
Material Assessment To achieve beautiful aging, the texture of even similarly shaped parts is carefully assessed to select materials that ensure a consistent overall aesthetic.
03
One-of-a-kind Tailoring Each product is tailored to best suit the leather's texture and expression.

Combining the Strengths of Both "Manufacturer" and "Artisan"
Production

In the world of bag making, it is common for "manufacturers" and "artisans" to work separately.

Maker Manufacturer
While strong in handling design proposals, material selection, and cost adjustment, there's a risk of insufficient reinforcement if structural understanding is lacking.
Craftsman Artisan
Strong in robust construction for long-term use and beautiful finishing. However, prioritizing technique can lead to over-specification, making mass production difficult.
Artisan work
Finished product
D.bell is a rare entity that possesses the strengths of both. By consistently carrying out production in-house, they understand the overall structure as a manufacturer while focusing on fine details as artisans, achieving both "ideal durability and beauty". They can also propose not just aesthetic designs but also "designs that are less prone to breakage with long-term use" in response to brand requests, which is D.bell's true value.

Overwhelming Durability Created by Invisible Reinforcement
Reinforcement technology

Bags often have more stress points than they appear. D.bell identifies each of these through experience and theory, and incorporates reinforcements made of nylon material in high-stress areas to compensate for the weaknesses of leather.

This reinforcement technique is rarely performed in typical factories. It prevents the leather from stretching or tearing while maintaining the natural texture of the leather.

Reinforced areas
Reinforcement is applied to unseen parts such as handles, shoulder straps, pull tabs, straps, and even stitching areas. For the peace of mind of the user, artisans meticulously craft these unseen areas with even greater care.

Thorough Management with 100% Inspection: If 100 are made, all 100 are inspected.
Quality control

D.bell's quality control is among the highest and most rigorous in Japan. While many manufacturers rely on "spot checks," D.bell's standard is 100% inspection. From the moment materials arrive until shipment, thorough checks are conducted across 7 steps.

Inspection process
1
Material InspectionCheck condition of leather, lining, and metal fittings
2
Post-Cutting InspectionCheck for scratches and inconsistencies
3
Material SelectionUnify color and texture due to lot differences
4
Parts InspectionRemove defective parts at component stage
5
Artisan InspectionCheck stitching, thread treatment, and dimensions
6
Finishing InspectionSafety check with needle detector
7
Pre-Shipment InspectionReconfirm changes during storage
Inspection
If even one item does not meet the standards, it will not be shipped. This thorough approach is why D.bell is called "Japan's finest".
