[HushTug] A thorough explanation of how to deal with color transfer on genuine leather!

Hello, I'm Nakajima, the designer of HushTug.

Today, I will explain how to prevent color transfer on leather products .

This article will help you care for your beloved leather products, so be sure to read to the end!

The relationship between leather type and color transfer

Chrome-tanned leather

First of all, whether or not a leather is prone to color transfer depends largely on the tanning method.

  • Tannin tanning (plant-based)
→ It has a natural texture, but it tends to absorb moisture easily and transfer color easily.

  • Chrome tanning (using chemicals)
→ It is characterized by its water-repellent properties and its relatively low color transfer resistance.

HushTug primarily uses chrome-tanned leather , and we select materials that are water-resistant and color-transfer resistant.

Be careful in summer

Sweating man with a leather backpack

Color transfer is more likely to occur in the summer when you sweat or when friction is applied when the item is wet .

For example, when you wear a backpack, the straps that rest on your shoulders can get damp with sweat and rub against your white T-shirt, causing color transfer.

Even with chrome-tanned leather, color transfer can occur if the conditions are right, so care must be taken.

What are the testing standards for leather water resistance?

Black leather is less likely to transfer color

The water resistance of leather can be quantified and an index called " fastness " is used.

HushTug's black leather has the highest rating of 5, while the navy leather has a rating of 4 .

Generally, fabrics with a fastness level of 3 or less are considered prone to color transfer.

Measures to prevent color transfer

A man wiping a leather bag

You can prevent color transfer by paying attention to the following points:

  • Wear an inner layer or jacket to prevent sweat from coming into direct contact with the leather.

  • Use waterproof spray beforehand to prevent water penetration

  • Switch to a tote bag or handbag in the summer

  • By choosing black or dark colored clothing , any color transfer will be less noticeable.

As leather continues to be used, dirt and moisture from hands will loosen the fibers, making it easier for water to penetrate .

Man touching a tote bag

Be especially careful with areas that are frequently touched, such as the handles of tote bags.

In such cases, we recommend regularly removing dirt with a leather cleaner .

If the handle becomes limp, you can have it replaced at a repair shop .

Leather products can be used for a longer period of time and remain beautiful if you take good care of them.

lastly

Wiping the leather

The most important thing to do to prevent leather color transfer is to

  • Do not get wet

  • Do not rub too hard

These are the two.

With a little knowledge and care, you can continue to enjoy using your precious leather items.

We hope this article will help you take care of your beloved leather products.
