HushTug Leather Care Complete Guide
Leather Care Guide
Complete Leather Care Guide
With proper care, your leather can maintain its beauty for many years.
We've compiled care methods for each material.
SECTION 01
Himeji Leather Care Method

For leathers other than shell cordovan, consistent basic care can help maintain the leather's original color, luster, and texture for a long time.

Leather Care Basic Monthly Maintenance Procedure
STEP 01
Remove dirt and dust with a soft brush like horsehair
Brushing
The key is to gently brush out dust and debris that has penetrated deep into the leather fibers.
STEP 02
Apply conditioning oil
Oil application

Take a small amount of oil in your palm (or a soft cloth) and warm it with your body temperature, then apply it thinly and evenly over the entire leather surface.

Since oil tends to accumulate in the grooves of the grain (surface irregularities), gently brush with a horsehair brush before it dries completely. The trick to a beautiful finish is to brush out any excess oil that has settled in the grooves and spread it evenly over the entire surface.

If you wish to avoid getting your hands dirty, please use a cloth. Be careful not to apply too much oil.
If cream remains in the grooves of the grain, it can cause leather damage and stains due to oxidation, so it must be carefully removed by brushing.
POINT — About using different brushes
Ideally, you should have separate brushes for "dust removal" and "finishing." By separating them by purpose, you can prevent re-adherence of dirt and keep your leather cleaner and more beautiful.
STEP 03
Allow to air dry naturally
Drying
Dry in a well-ventilated, shaded area for about 1 hour. Avoid direct sunlight or windy outdoor areas.
STEP 04
Wipe off excess oil with a dry cloth
Wiping
Once the surface is no longer sticky, the leather is good to go. If the oil is not completely removed, it can cause color transfer to clothing, so wipe thoroughly.
STEP 05
Finish with a waterproofing spray (optional)
On rainy days or when worried about dirt, lightly spray with a waterproofing spray (fluorine-based, such as Collonil). This will reliably protect the surface from water and dirt without compromising the breathability of the leather.
⚠ Important Notes on Waterproofing Sprays

Do not use silicone-based water repellent sprays.
Silicone components can block the breathability of the leather, potentially causing mold and deterioration.

For HushTug products, please use a "fluorine-based" waterproofing spray, which is gentler on the leather.

Precautions for Use Precautions

① Avoid direct sunlight: Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause fading and deformation.

② Do not leave dirt unattended: If dust, sebum, sweat, etc., remain attached for a long time, the leather will deteriorate faster. Make monthly maintenance a habit.

SECTION 02
Shell Cordovan Care Method
Shell Cordovan is a high-quality leather with beautiful luster and strength, but it is very vulnerable to water and sweat. Leaving it wet or with sweat can cause stains and distortion.
For long wallets and card cases, forcefully opening them too wide can easily cause creases and wrinkles in the leather, so it is important to avoid opening them more than 180 degrees.

As part of daily care, gently wipe the surface with a soft cloth about once a week to remove dust, sebum, and dirt.

POINT — A shine can be achieved with just dry wiping
Gently, without rubbing hard. Even this alone has the effect of laying down the fibers to create shine and making small scratches and stains less noticeable.
SECTION 03
Items that can be used for all leathers

If the leather surface feels dry or rough, moisturize it with a leather cream approximately once every 3 months. HushTug recommends a clear, plant-based emulsion cream (Collonil Aniline Emulsion Cream).

Cream Usage and Precautions
Emulsion Cream — For daily care
Contains a balanced amount of water and oil to moisturize leather. This highly permeable cream is ideal for routine conditioning and moisturizing.
Oil-based Cream — For special care
Used when leather is severely dry, for special care once every six months to a year, or when a strong shine is desired.
⚠ Precautions when using oil-based cream

Hardening of leather: Applying too much can cause leather fibers to harden, losing their original suppleness.

Mold growth: Applying too thickly can impair the leather's breathability, increasing the risk of mold due to trapped moisture.

Applying a large amount of oil after the leather has dried out can cause stains and distortion.
"Even if it's still in good condition, it's been about three months" — this proactive, light care is the shortest path to maintaining the leather's health for a long time.
Collonil Aniline Emulsion Cream
Collonil Aniline Emulsion Cream After application, air dry in the shade. Resume use once the surface is dry.
First Aid for Stains and Spots

If water or sweat causes a stain, do not rub it excessively. Lightly wipe it with a soft cloth, then air dry in the shade immediately. For stubborn stains, use a very small amount of specialized "Stain Cleansing Water" by applying it to a cloth and gently wiping in a circular motion.

Stain Cleansing Water
M. MOWBRAY Stain Cleansing Water Can also be used to remove dirt from whitened areas of waterproofing spray. With proper care, it can be used for over 20 years.
Care Schedule Quick Reference
New
New / Immediately after purchase (general leather)

Apply waterproofing spray.
※If there is dust, please brush first.

Weekly
Used weekly / Using bags for general commuting

Brush to remove dust.
※For shell cordovan, gently dry wipe with a soft cloth.

Regular
Monthly or seasonal change (when dry)

Perform moisturizing and conditioning care with emulsion cream.
※We recommend care approximately once every 3 months as a "prevention" before the leather dries out.

Emergency
When exposed to rain, sweat, or dirt

Immediately wipe with a soft cloth and air dry in the shade. For stubborn stains, use Stain Cleansing Water.

SECTION 04
Tips for Long-Term Leather Care
Leather is like "human skin"; by "cleaning when dirty" and "replenishing oil when dry," you can maintain its suppleness and luster.

Excessive cream or oil application, or harsh rubbing, is counterproductive. Thinly, gently, and regularly.

Since the type of leather differs depending on the bag or wallet, it is important to adapt care to its purpose and leather type.

Especially for shell cordovan, the approach is "dry wiping → cream as needed."

Establishing a regular care routine allows the leather to develop a deeper color, luster, and texture with each use, allowing you to enjoy its "aging process."

Summary

With proper care, HushTug leather items can become "lifelong companions that last 10, 20 years." Since suitable care methods differ between shell cordovan and general leather, it is important to understand their respective characteristics and regularly perform dirt removal, moisturizing, and waterproofing treatments.
